I started CrossFit-ing in 2010 while in Arizona. In November 2010, I returned to Washington, DC and began searching for a CrossFit box. I went to a couple before I visited MPH. I thought I knew CrossFit and was going to bypass Elements and move right into the regular classes. I instantly realized that MPH was a different place. The coaching was intense but also holistic—strength mattered but not at the expense of mobility. There was an emphasis on safely achieving full range of motion gradually under lighter weight before moving under more weight. At the time the process seemed slow and unnecessary—I was certainly stronger than the weight that was on my bar, right?

So my first few months at MPH were humbling. After many conversations with myself I committed to doing each workout to the best of my ability, stop worrying about the weight that I was doing in comparison to others and stop worrying about how much I was being scaled and instead give my best effort. I recommend this approach to anyone at CrossFit MPH. Effort to me is the most important element of CrossFit—it is the one thing you can control every day and in every workout.

CrossFit has given me a lot but the MPH community has given me more. The friendships forged at MPH are high-quality and without pretense. I consider myself very fortunate to have found MPH and to be given the opportunity to coach at MPH.numichael
