Well they say “if you are never tested you cannot testify” . Here is another story about why I Crossfit.
Some of you know that I had a new job opportunity come my way recently. I was very excited about it and everything was set for me to start this new job on November 23. I turned in my resignation at my current employer last Friday and the background check began…I have nothing to hide I thought so no worries right? Wrong! The background check revealed a DWI, which was over 5 years ago (Alcohol has never brought me joy only pain). Anyhow, I failed to disclose this on my application because I was thinking it was a traffic violation and not the misdemeaner that it is. As a result the offer for the job was rescinded. Great! Now what do I do? Well I can either begin a new job search and leave my current employer as planned or I can ask for my job back. Since I am not in a position to just quit working while I look for another opportunity, I now have the very humbling task of asking for my job back. Of course they are under no obligation to give it back to me, but I am hopeful that they will understand my situation and welcome me back.
So how does this relate to Crossfit? I hear the coaches say often that what we do is not just physically challenging, but also mentally challenging. What keeps us moving forward to complete a WOD or to lift heavy weight when we don’t think we are capable is the mental side of the equation. I have seen how the right attitude and mental state can make a difference in my workouts. I point to last Friday where I exceeded my previous dead lift PR by 80lbs. I could not believe it myself! I had the right attitude, focus and mental component dialed in that day. I have seen it in my results on the WODs over these past few weeks like an improved mile time by 30 seconds, etc.
So the situation I face above, while unfortunate and will go down as a lesson learned, is not going to be easy to walk through. But, I will muster the same mental focus that keeps me going at MPH to keep walking forward and facing whatever consequences I must face. I will not let it beat me…because I am mentally stronger than the task in front of me. I will not grovel…because I am better than that. I will face my employer, my cohorts and my staff with honesty and humility because that is what a Crossfitter would do.
I tell you all this, because MPH and all who are associated with it are like a family to me and if my experiences can in any way help you to be a better athlete, brother, sister, mother, daughter, son, parent or person, than I can be better too.
So wish me luck, tomorrow. You can be sure I will be focused on the task at hand.
To my Crossfit family, thanks for listening.
Dave “702” O
Once again. I am honored for your openness and friendship. Be strong and all the best tomorrow.
Dave!!! This is sad news. At the same time, I’m barely concerned, because your head is in such a great place. I’m very hopeful that with your right mind and right action, you can get to the right result. You have been a real inspiration lately, not just in sharing with us, but also in getting so freakin strong! I know that will serve you.
So best of luck tomorrow! Whatever happens, know it’s for a reason that may not be apparent to you just yet…
Dave, I wish you the best! We are thinking of you. Jeff
Dave,
You got it buddy…and we all have your back.
And, while I know it will all work out…if for some reason it does not I am looking for someone to come with me on a Nationwide Karaoke Tour next month. 30 cities in 30 days. I am kicking it off at the Holiday Inn Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We will sing for tips. And I have a feeling that you and I can work a room pretty well together. Think spandex jumpsuits a’la David Lee Roth – and we can do Burpees while singing “Jump.”
On second thought…good luck tomorrow.
StuLu
Dave –
I could say I’m sorry for your situation, and I am; your oversight is their shortsightedness and loss.
I could say I believe in you, and I do – I’ve seen the remarkable man and athlete you are – I learn from you nearly every time we workout together.
With that as preamble, instead I’ll say that just as you’ve been relentlessly encouraging, thoughtful and good to your team mates – so shall we be there for you.
You are in my thoughts – you can do it. If I could do this set with you, I would.
very truly yours
