Sunday, December 20, 2009

First held in 2007, the CrossFit Games is already the most prestigious annual fitness competition in the world. Its winner earns the right to claim the title of “fittest man/woman on the planet.” In 2007, about 60 athletes traveled to Aromas, CA to compete; in 2008, there were over 100 competitors, and because of CrossFit’s exponential growth and increase in popularity, pre-qualifying events were held in 2009 to control the size of the competition. The Games showcases the boundlessness of human capacity, highlights the strength of the global CrossFit community and demonstrates that CrossFit is truly “the sport of fitness.” This year, there are two pre-qualifying stages: the first, Sectionals, and the second, Regionals. Our Sectional competition will be held March 27-28, 2010 in Annandale, VA, just 15 minutes from our front door. The top 20 men and women will move on to the Regional competition in May (there will also be an affiliate team competition at this event).

It is time that MPH gets in on the action. We will be sending interested athletes to Sectionals in March, and hope that all those not competing will turn out in support of our team. Individuals must register themselves in either case (competing or spectating), and registration may open via the Games website as early as this Monday, December 21, 2009. We will announce any updates on our site.

There is nothing quite like the focused energy of impending competition, and this can be channeled into massive athletic improvements and a galvanizing of bonds among athletes. What is more, competition can and should be enjoyable, and is rarely worth the physical and emotional expense if it is anything other than fun. Sectionals is an opportunity to experience the breadth and power of the greater CrossFit community, test your physical capacities and limits, and strengthen your mental fortitude. That said, we are going in order to first have an amazing time.

If you are thinking about competing, we want you to first ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Are you serious about training and nutrition?
  2. Do you have the time and mental fortitude to devote to additional training requirements?
  3. Are you currently performing most of our workouts as prescribed?

We have already discussed competition with several individuals, but if you have not yet joined the conversation and would like to, now is the time. If you are interested in competing, but have questions about your experience and preparedness, please talk to us via email, phone or in person. Many of you are more skilled and prepared than you may think, and with focus, determination, support and, most importantly, good coaching, three months is ample time to improve capacity in almost any domain.

Once again, registration for Sectionals may begin as early as Monday, December 21st, and individual athletes and spectators must register on their own. As Rob K. so eloquently put it, we are excited to throw our hat in the proverbial ring. If they don’t know MPH, they’re about to find out.

Rest today.
