*Travel Advisory* — Orlando, Florida
No snow, 70 degrees.
Haha.
So, Cait and I met up in Orlando because I was down here Thurs and Fri for a case, and she had travel too. We figured a couple days in the sun would do us good, and on Friday we realized that we had quite fortunately missed the blizzard.
This morning, we woke up and headed over to what looked on the internet like the best Crossfit box in Orlando: http://crossfitfirebase.com/.
It was well off the beaten path, probably 10 miles outside Orlando, in a warehouse space in a modern, largely vacant industrial park. Danny, proprieter, is a military guy; armed forces flags hang everywhere, and the guys who work out there (it’s mostly guys) are BIG.
So Cait and I walk in, no idea what to expect. And guess what’s on the board as the WOD of the day — just guess…
Yup. The whiteboard read, in green marker: “Fran – 21-15-9 Thruster/Pullup.” It sat there, plain as day, simple as that, no bells, no whistles, nothing. If John had written it, he’d at least have put it in that enunciated, large block print (large ’cause it’s Fran) — but this guy scribbled it up there like it was any other WOD.
I turned to Cait. “Just our luck. It’s fucking Fran. I knew this would happen.”
The place was packed. Large guys walking around warming up for what I was sure would be 3 minute performances. I felt like everyone in the room had a 400lb deadlift.
Danny paired us off. I chose Cait (again!). I warmed up with 10 burpees, 20 squats, 5 thrusters with the bar, and 5 pullups.
Meanwhile, Cait built my bar. Some guy came up to her and tried to take the bar away (apparently he liked our spot). She kindly informed him it was our spot (not so kindly). I finished my warmup, came over, and said ‘what’s going on?’ He said — I kid you not — “It’s Fran, dude,” like I had never set foot in a Crossfit facility before. Caitlin glared at him. He then huffed away to another spot by the pullup bar.
Danny started the first heat, and I shared the pullup bar with a guy doing 45 lbs, and three large fellows (one was the dickhead described above), all eyeing me like I was fresh meat.
I knew during the round of 21 that I was going to take the first heat. (I should be happy — I PR’d with a 4:58), but I didn’t leave it all on the floor. John would have been pissed. Sorry John.
Next up was Cait. She rocked an 8:34 at the Rx’d weight, green band. The guys crowded around her like they had never seen a chick throw around 65 lbs before. Apparently they haven’t met the fine ladies of MPH.
We got a lot of kudos, and we’re glad to have represented MPH. We definitely felt like the more conditioned athletes in the room, so that was cool.
BIG shout out to Danny and Raquel. It was an AWESOME box. Their pullup bar could accommodate like 10-15 people, and they had another one in the front of the room. The vibe was awesome, they were super friendly and chill. If you’re ever in Orlando…I’m just saying.
On the way out we checked out the board. Cait killed all the girls. I would have taken it for the guys, but some guy named “Weeds” (seriously) had a 3:08, and there was a 4:15 on the board. Next time.
Anyway, our strength focus is the last thing I want to mention in this post — it works. I have not felt so comfortable with 95lbs before. And Cait looked really strong too.
We’re looking forward to Fran at MPH… Might just shout it out next week, actually…
🙂
Mike,
Great story! Thanks for sharing with us. I could not think of two more appropriate representatives of MPH to show the Orlando crossfit, or any other crossfit, what we are made of. Way to represent!
Dave O.
Mike,
That was an amazing review! You are without a doubt the Tom Sietsma of the Crossfit world. Really enjoyed reading this…thanks for sharing. Now, please get home and help us shovel.
