A recent CNN piece ostensibly blew the lid off our whole Paleo prescription: a university professor ate a diet of snack cakes and cereal for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds. Wait, what? Don’t worry—the science is terrible, and Stephan Guyenet of Whole Health Source deconstructed it (here), and added himself to our Nutrition Websites We Like page in the process.

Rest today.

Thanks for the literature coach. I am always amazed at the experiments people will try.

I read that story when it came out. They conveniently forgot to ask him how he felt — lethargy, depression? — while he was eating all that crap. Maybe he lost weight, but there is so much more to the story.

It’s a good article. There are a couple others out there as well. Here is another:

I mentioned this on the Paleo blog, but the fact that a guy lost weight while starving himself is neither surprising nor relevant. If he had instead used white rice instead of twinkies, nobody would have noticed, even though the effects would have been similar. The candy was just a publicity hook.
